Leave of Absence

Paolo Gentiloni is on a leave of absence while he serves as the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs.

The Honorable Paolo Gentiloni is a distinguished fellow in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings and is former prime minister of Italy. He is a professional journalist and has a degree in political science. His latest book is “La sfida impopulista” (Rizzoli, 2018). Gentiloni is one of the founding members of the Italian Democratic Party and has served as a member of Parliament since 2001. In December 2016, Gentiloni was appointed prime minister of Italy, serving until June 1, 2018. In 2018, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies for his fifth term and is currently a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 2014, he was appointed as minister of foreign affairs by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and was minister of communication between 2006 and 2008 under Prime Minister Romano Prodi. From 2005 to 2006, Gentiloni was chairman of the Broadcasting Services Watchdog Committee.
