The energy transition and workforce development in the US

With tight labor markets and a rapidly transforming economy, the U.S. faces a growing shortage of qualified workers to fill open positions. This is particularly apparent and problematic in industries essential for the economy of the future such as low-carbon energy, electricity generation and transmission, infrastructure, and technology. Without enough skilled workers the U.S. risks losing out on significant economic growth opportunities, which will hamper the development of new industries and constrain the growth of existing ones. Given these workforce challenges, questions arise on what initiatives the public and private sectors should invest in to ensure the U.S. meets its current and future workforce needs.

On September 11, the Brookings Center on Regulation and Markets (CRM) hosted a public event addressing these important topics. The event included a keynote fireside chat with Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) followed by a panel of policy and industry experts on workforce development challenges, particularly those related to the coming energy transition. This event is a part of the CRM series on Reimagining Modern-day Markets and Regulations.
