The Trump era: New trends in Sino-U.S. economics and trade

Through the OBOR initiative and the AIIB, China’s economic leadership in the world is expanding both regionally and internationally. At the same time, pulling the U.S. out of the TPP was a major part of Donald Trump’s campaign, a strategy that he has pursued thus far in his presidency.

After the Xi-Trump Summit in Mar-A-Lago, the two countries have been working towards a more amiable partnership. A 10-point trade deal was negotiated based on economic cooperation, including areas such as agriculture, finance and energy etc. In addition Donald Trump sent representatives to attend the OBOR initiative in Beijing, showing America’s recognition of the importance of this initiative.

In the Trump era, how will Sino- U.S. economics and trade develop? What are the opportunities and challenges? And how will the roles of both China and the U.S. change in global economics? On June 1, the Brookings- Tsinghua Center for Public Policy and the Center for China in the World Economy co-hosted a dialogue on “The Trump era: New trends in Sino- U.S. economics and trade” featuring David Dollar and LI Daokui on the economic cooperation between the two countries, as well as the roles these countries will play in world economics.
