Food Export Buyers Missions are Unique, Curated Experiences that Maximize Your Time and Investment

In partnership with the Southern U.S. Trade Association (SUSTA), Food Export will be conducting a Caribbean and Latin American Buyers Mission this year! Taking place in Miami, this annual mission is a great opportunity to meet one-on-one with Caribbean and Latin American buyers interested in your products.

With limited agricultural production, most Caribbean islands rely heavily on imported food products, particularly from the United States. As tourist arrivals in most islands continue to improve, prospects for further market expansion are always present. Caribbean importers have a long history of doing business with the United States. Their strong interest in U.S. suppliers and products is mainly due to close proximity, long-standing reputation of high-quality products, and superior quality of service.

Register early as meeting slots are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

In July 2023, Dairy Products Inc. (DPI), located in Prairie, Minnesota, attended Food Export’s Food Ingredients Buyers Mission at the Institute of Food Technologist’s IFT Show in Chicago, where they met with multiple international buyers. The supplier’s meeting with the buyer from Colombia went exceptionally well and the company established a relationship and created a new business opportunity. Between July and September 2023, DPI exported more than $284,000 in whey protein dairy ingredients to Colombia.

According to Elizabeth Perez, Director of International Sales at DPI, “Participating in Food Export’s Buyers Missions and Trade Missions is essential to our export success. We can meet buyers in person that we normally would not get to meet and begin to establish a relationship with. It’s a quick meeting, but enough time to start the conversations about how Dairy Products Inc. can provide high-quality solutions to the buyers. Food Export’s team is always fantastic, and their programs are well-designed and well-organized.”

Dairy Products Inc. was founded in 1995 and has a long and respected history of supplying premium dairy ingredients, specialty services, and peace-of-mind risk management programs to the dairy industry. DPI offers dairy ingredients such as milk fat, milk powders, cheese, whey powder, and specialty dairy ingredients. The Minnesota supplier has participated in Food Export programs since 1998 participating in Buyers Missions, educational webinars, Focused Trade Missions, the U.S. Foodlink Featured Products, and Product Showcase events.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.

Since 1931, family-owned and operated Venus Wafers has pioneered healthful crackers and flatbreads to meet the changing tastes of convenience-driven consumers. From their founder’s first product more than 85 years ago, a 100% whole wheat wafer bread, and today in their Mariner and CäPeachio’s crackers and flatbreads, Venus has always strived to bake great ingredients into a variety of shapes and sizes and package them in an appealing fashion, “Venus – Simple Done Right.”

This Massachusetts-based supplier has participated in Food Export-Northeast programs since 2015 to grow and expand their international brand. In 2023, Venus Wafers participated in the Market Access Program funded Branded Program for the fourteenth year to gain brand exposure for its cracker and flatbread products. The supplier used its allocated funding to complete an advertising campaign in Canada and exhibit at four industry trade shows. These activities helped Venus Wafers gain $70,000 in sales, $155,000 in projected sales, 24 new foreign buyer contacts, and establish 4 new distributorships while gaining 1 new export market.

Last year, Venus Wafers participated in three Food Export Buyers Missions. They attended the Natural Products Buyers Mission during the Natural Products Expo West Show in March, the Specialty Food Buyers Mission at the Summer Fancy Food Show, and the Private Label Buyers Mission at the Private Label Manufacturers Association Show in November. Participation helped the company gain international brand exposure, new foreign buyer contacts, and new export sales. The company specifically gained $35,000 in sales after connecting with buyers from Australia, Canada, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands at the Specialty Food Buyers Mission. Their sales to Australia and the Cayman Islands are also notable first-time market sales for the supplier. Venus Wafers’ attending Vice President of Sales and Marketing, James Anderko shared, “The meetings were well organized, and the buyers came prepared to discuss their needs for the Venus Brands crackers and flatbreads. The length of the meetings was excellent and I had enough time to cover all items in our portfolio. We appreciate the continued hard work and great events provided by Food Export.”

In May of 2022, Herr Foods Inc., located in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, attended Food Export’s Sweets & Snacks Buyers Mission in Chicago, where they met with a buyer from Mexico. Herr Foods had previously worked with Soriana Club Mexico but had not sold anything in the last several years. They re-established the relationship and created new business because they met the buyer in person during the Buyers Mission. In 2022, Herr Foods exported more than $55,000 in barrel snacks to Mexico, and in 2023, it sold $70,000 of barrel snacks and club packs to this buyer. Herr Foods anticipates that sales of their snacks to this Mexican buyer will double in 2024.

According to Don Lyle, International Sales Director at Herr Foods Inc., “We had lost touch with this buyer over the years. Because of Food Export’s Buyers Mission, we met face to face with the buyer, and it gave us a chance to look at new opportunities in club-size packs and rejuvenate our connection with this buyer, resulting in new sales and, more importantly, a long-term relationship.”

In 2023, Herr Foods Inc. participated in another Food Export activity and attended Food Export’s Focused Trade Mission to South Korea for Healthy Ingredients, Retail, and Food Service. The company participated in a retail tour in Seoul and met with 18 Korean buyers during private meetings the following day. Due to these actions, the Nottingham, Pennsylvania-based supplier gained $23,000 in sales to Korea for their snack food products. This sale marked the first initial shipment to the Korean company, with hopes of more shipments in the near future.

Herr Foods Inc. was founded in 1946 and has grown immensely, becoming a leader in the snack food industry. Herr Foods Inc. produces over 340 snack food items in the retail distribution channel. The company has been family-owned and operated since its start over 78 years ago. Herr Foods Inc. has been dedicated to exporting its products to over 50 countries since 1995.

Herr Foods Inc. has utilized Food Export programs such as Buyers Missions, Market Builder, Focused Trade Missions, the Export Advisor Program, the Food Export Helpline™, seminars, and the Online Product Catalog to help aid in foreign exports throughout the years.

Increased Export to Canada for Non-Dairy Milk Products from New York https://www.foodexport.org/success-stories/elmhurst-milked/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 18:40:00 +0000 https://www.foodexport.org/?post_type=success-stories&p=3922 Discover the story of Elmhurst Milked and their journey from being New York City's last dairy company to the fastest-growing plant-based beverage company on the market!

The post Increased Export to Canada for Non-Dairy Milk Products from New York appeared first on Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA–Northeast.

]]>
Elmhurst Milked, from Elma, New York, participated in Food Export-Northeast’s 2023 Market Access Program-funded Branded Program to increase brand awareness for its non-dairy milk products. The supplier used the allocated funding to promote its products in Canada through trade magazine advertising, billboard promotions, product demonstrations, social media, retail promotions, and bilingual promotional sell sheets.

This month, Elmhurst Milked reported earning over $6.3 million in sales to the market with the assistance of Branded Program funding of the aforementioned tactics. They also shared that they gained 200 new foreign buyer contacts, established 7 new distributorships, and project to complete over $8.9 million in sales over the next twelve months.

In 2016, Henry Schwartz closed New York City’s last dairy company, Elmhurst. This historic company had been in his family for over 90 years since his father and uncle hand-bottled and delivered milk to Queens and Brooklyn in a truck full of ice blocks. Being that the business of old had ended, Henry was intrigued by a steady decline in dairy consumption and the changing American diet. More people were eating healthier, adopting plant-based alternatives, and becoming mindful of environmental impact. Henry began to see the possibility of evolving into a non-dairy company. But what did he know about plant milks? Then fate intervened. Henry had the chance to meet with Dr. Cheryl Mitchell, a famous plant food scientist, who was looking for a partner to help bring her revolutionary Hydro Release™ milling process to market. Using just water, Hydro Release separates the natural components of a grain, nut, or seed before reassembling them as a smooth, creamy beverage. The original ingredient’s nutrition is maintained, and no gums or emulsifiers are needed to hold the product together. Henry went all in on the plant-based revolution, partnering with Dr. Cheryl to bring her technology to market. Henry preserved the iconic name along with the year it first appeared on the streets of New York. Today, Elmhurst 1925 is the fastest-growing plant-based beverage company on the market!

Elmhurst Milked has participated in Food Exports programs since 2016 utilizing the Branded Program and the Online Product Catalog, attending Buyers Missions, Virtual Trade Missions, and webinars.
